Earlier this year, we saw conflict escalate in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A group called the M23 rebels were behind the moves, and they captured key regions such as Goma and Bukavu. They remain in control of these regions today.
But, at the same time, the DRC and Rwanda, who are suspected of supporting the M23 rebels, have signed a US-brokered peace deal in Washington. As a part of this deal, the United States and the DRC signed a minerals deal. From a self-interest point of view, the United States will benefit from such a deal; otherwise, it wouldn't have brokered it.
In today's episode, I question if this US deal is in pursuit of peace or power. Do they want to help the DRC, or will US self-interest see this situation not improve? I discuss all this and much more in this episode.
