Looking Forward To 2023 - China

One aspect of the US $858bn defence bill is to bolster support for Taiwan. The US has claimed China is currently working on a Taiwan reunification strategy before 2027. So we might not see any active assaults on Taiwan in 2023, but it remains a long-term geopolitical issue.

China is the rising power, and they are building strategic partnerships from the Eurasian land block, Africa, and further. The Belt and Road initiative is China’s aim to bring more relevancy back to Mackinder’s Heartland Theory. Whoever controls the Eurasian landmass controls the surrounding region, and hence the world. The US currently controls the oceans. Mahan’s main geopolitical theory argued whoever controlled the seas controlled the world order. A multipolar world of land trade versus sea trade? Closed borders or closed ocean straits?
