In the “Year of Elections”, there are still more elections to discuss in key geopolitical states. We’ve seen the conclusion of the Taiwanese presidential election, and I’ll also discuss how elections in Iran, Mexico, and El Salvador will affect domestic politics and regional geopolitics.
Introduction
This past weekend we saw the fallout of the Taiwanese election. Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party won 40.05% of the vote and will replace Tsai Ing-wen, also of the Democratic Progressive Party, who was ineligible for re-election due to term limits.
The United States congratulated Taiwan on a democratic and fair election process, but with a turnout percentage of 71.86%, this has dropped around 3% from the 2020 election. Versus other examples of voter turnout, however, the Taiwanese election is a shining victory for democracy. In response to congratulations from the US, UK and Japan, China responded by inferring these states as interfering with Chinese internal affairs.
