What Is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is the new artificial intelligence (AI) system that we can communicate with. Created by OpenAI, it was released on Wednesday and has already crossed 1 million users. That’s quicker than the iPhone, Facebook, and Netflix!
The system can be used to communicate with and answer questions. The system currently runs on GPT-3, which is the third version of the language model created by Open AI. Its aim is to sound as natural as possible when communicating. Currently, the system can spread misinformation but sounds convincingly correct. Could AI contribute to the spread of propaganda and misinformation in the news? It’s difficult to know what to believe currently. This is without more variations from the truth coming from artificial intelligence.
The Relationship Between AI And Their Creators?
Are AI systems an extension of their creator? After all, they are code that has to be written by a person. And this person, or people, have their own biases. Their own political opinions. Their own ideologies. But what if a person doesn’t write the code? Could an AI create its own AI? Would this created AI experience the same biases as the parent AI code creator? Ultimately, it would still display the same biases as the original human creator. This is referred to as algorithmic bias. It is addressed in the proposed Artificial Intelligence Act from the EU. The act is set to ban AI from many uses. Remote biometric recognition and apps that manipulate people or take advantage of vulnerabilities of certain groups.
One issue with AI is how it could squash human creativity. There are already tools online that can write essays. How natural these pieces of text sound is debatable. But that is the whole idea of language models used by AI. GPT-3 came after GPT-1 and GPT-2. And GPT-4, GPT-5, and further language models will come in the future. Every update makes the AI systems using the language model sound more natural. One day, will we not know if we are communicating with an AI system or an actual person over the internet?
AI Sentience – How Did Humans Develop Consciousness? Could AI Do The Same?
One such mistake that would have global ramifications would be the sentience of AI. Sentience means experiencing feelings and sensations. With AI, they would be able to make their own decisions and would feel pain if they were to be shut down (or die), for example. This leads to regulation concerns about how to treat AI systems from an emotional, well-being viewpoint. Google’s Lambda AI is so realistic that a former employee said it might have its own feelings, and “its wants should be respected”.
In human history, when did we develop sentience? This links to consciousness within humans, something that most animals don’t have. Understanding the deeper meaning. Can complex internal human systems be mapped to an artificial system? Or can enough of our human systems be so that an AI can develop sentience over time through experiences? Especially through a combination of creators. Lambda hasn’t passed the Turing Test. The test assesses the machine’s ability to display human-equivalent intelligent behaviour. Consciousness isn’t well understood at all. Our brains have many different areas, that often are battling with each other for control. One example is Wim Hof. He uses cold exposure as a method to access the deeper regions of his brain. To completely shut off the internal monologue in our heads. This paper debates that consciousness actually originates in the hindbrain.
Did we develop consciousness by encountering problems, addressing them, learning from them, and adapting from them? In human history, competition and survival were the most intense and difficult. And so led to the most change in us as a species. The expansion of the cerebral cortex. We have a tectum buried under the cortex. A tectum is an area of the brain in fish and amphibians and is the largest part of their brains. On a basic level, it controls movement and information about how our eyes, head, and other body parts perceive inputs. But can artificial systems ever have a conscience, if we don’t even know what it is ourselves or how it developed? Could we look at the tectum of other animals in an attempt to code AI that could develop sentience from there?
AI currently lacks the emotion that a piece of human-created media can provide. One key writing principle is people don’t remember what you say, they remember how you make them feel. Does the digital world full of digital systems currently incite positive feelings? We are social beings, and can an artificial system replicate that need to socialise? Can they cure loneliness, felt especially in the digital era? That sounds like a lonely world to me. We currently sit in our digital worlds, and it’s trending more that way with the metaverse, AI, and VR. As the crypto folks say, go out and touch some grass every once in a while.
One thing artificial intelligence systems do is expand human intelligence. It allows us to have back-and-forth communication about a variety of issues in the past. Like ChatGPT, it only knows and understands events before 2021. Can we create AI code that self-updates? An AI that learns over time? Or does this create the potential for AI that become out of human control? The artificial intelligence industry needs careful monitoring as it develops. Used in the right way, it can advance humanity. Used in the wrong way, it creates countless imaginative nightmares.

Concluding Remarks
One thing ChatGPT does is let our minds wander. I went from the history of humans to what exists at the bottom of the ocean. And I travelled through space and time on my way there. As I said earlier, ChatGPT can often spread incorrect information. So check alternative sources. But it allows us to feed our curiosity. I believe it’s an excellent step in the right direction based on how accessible it is. It aids our intelligence and doesn’t take over it.
